Explore Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss
Body lift surgery is the cosmetic improvement of patients after massive weight loss (50 to 300 pounds) from dieting or surgery. Following this amount of weight loss, the skin and tissues lack the elasticity necessary to shrink down to the reduced body size. The surgical goal of body contouring after major weight loss is to remove the excess fat and skin and elevate and tighten sagging tissues. Patients who have lost more than half of their body weight usually have multiple areas of the body that need to be treated and this can be done in stages or as one combination surgery if health, budget and recovery time allow.
By using a combination of specialized techniques, Dr. Griffin is able to improve the shape and appearance of massive weight loss patients, allowing them the freedom to wear fitted clothing again.
- Areas that typically need lifting and tightening include:
- Abdomen, hips and lower back
- Breasts and upper back
- ButtocksInner thighs down to knees
- Outer thighs
A Mid-Body Lift or Trunk Lipectomy as performed by Dr. Griffin addresses the loose skin of the abdomen, hips, lower back, outer thighs and buttock area. This procedure is like an Abdominoplasty with the incision running all the way around the body. A Thigh Lift removes loose skin from the inner thighs with an incision in the groin crease and sometimes one extending down the inside of the leg. Loose arm skin is corrected with a Brachioplasty procedure and upper back rolls are removed with an Upper Back Lift procedure. Sagging breast are improved with a Mastopexy orMastopexy with Augmentation. The result of these procedures whether done individually or combined is a more normal appearance to the body with smoother contours. This is, in essence, the final phase of your total weight loss experience.
It is important to know that some patients, depending upon their goals, may require multiple procedures on different areas to achieve their ideal result. For some, these procedures can be combined in one operation, but it may take as many as three surgeries to achieve the optimal result.
What should you expect?
Body Lift surgery is a complex multistep process that can take anywhere from 3 – 6 hours depending upon the areas to be targeted and amount of work to be done. Patients usually stay at least one night in the hospital under medical supervision. Drains remain for 1 to 2 weeks. Recovery time of 2 – 4 weeks is usually necessary depending on how many procedures are combined.
The results of body lift surgery following weight loss are visible almost immediately. Return to normal activity and exercising may take several months. Visible scars will fade over time but the overall results are long lasting, provided that you maintain a stable weight and general level of fitness.
