Breast Augmentation

Today’s breast augmentation is vastly improved over that of past years. Safer, more streamlined techniques, enhanced implant options, and an emphasis on natural-looking results have created a superior experience from start to finish. Prospective breast augmentation patients visit our Nashville, Tennessee, office with unique physical characteristics and aesthetic goals, and Dr. Griffin helps them achieve the beautiful results that suit them perfectly.

How Can Breast Augmentation Help?

Breast augmentation is the only effective option for adding long-term volume to the breasts. In many cases, today’s breast implants can last for decades, providing patients with years of confidence and enjoyment. Breast augmentation is best for healthy, nonsmoking adult women who have realistic expectations for surgery. Breast augmentation is indicated for the following concerns:

  • Breasts that you feel are too small for your frame
  • Asymmetrical breasts (unevenly sized)
  • Breasts that have lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss

Your Breast Augmentation Options

Breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure that’s designed to match each individual’s goals. During your consultation, Dr. Griffin guides you through each of your options and helps you select the best implants for your body, your desired look, and your lifestyle.

Saline implants are made from a sterile saltwater solution that’s housed inside a silicone shell. These implants tend to be a bit less expensive than silicone implants and are approved for patients 18 and older. If the implant ruptures, it deflates rapidly (and visibly) and the saline is harmlessly absorbed by the body. Saline implants are filled after insertion, so they can fit through smaller incisions.

Silicone implants are filled with either cohesive silicone gel or highly cohesive silicone gel—often called “gummy bear” implants. Most people agree that silicone implants look and feel more natural than saline implants. They are approved for patients 22 and older and are the most popular choice for breast augmentation worldwide.

Both saline and silicone implants are available in either a round shape or an anatomical or teardrop shape.

What to Expect

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure done under general anesthesia. Dr. Griffin makes incisions in 1 of 3 potential locations:

  • Around the lower edge of your areolas (periareolar)
  • In your armpits (transaxillary)
  • In the fold beneath your breasts (inframammary)

He creates a pocket within the breast—either behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle and breast tissue—and places the implant into the pocket. After repeating this procedure on the other breast, he evaluates your breasts for symmetry and closes the incisions.

After anesthesia recovery and a brief period of observation, you’re free to return home in the care of a trusted friend or relative. It’s important to take it easy for the remainder of the day, and to follow Dr. Griffin’s instructions exactly.

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within 1 week. However, it’s important for patients to take more time away from exercise and other strenuous activities.

Within a few months, swelling subsides and the tissues stretch and soften, allowing your implants to settle into a natural-looking shape and position. Over the course of about a year, your incisions will fade to discreet, well-concealed scars. You can anticipate many years of enjoyment from your enhanced body.

Common Questions

How do I choose the right breast implants?

With so many options for breast implants, it can be difficult to choose the perfect pair. During your consultation, Dr. Griffin walks you through your options. He takes careful measurements of your body to help him recommend implants that are just right for you. He listens carefully to your goals to help you choose a size, style, and implant type that will create the results you want.

Can breast implants lift my breasts?

On their own, implants can provide a negligible amount of lift. However, for breasts that are significantly saggy, a combined breast lift with augmentation may be a better option for improving the size, shape, and position of the breasts.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation should not interfere with your ability to breastfeed, and breastfeeding with implants is perfectly safe. During your consultation, share your concerns with Dr. Griffin. He can take certain steps during surgery to ensure that the glands and ducts are not affected.
