LOOK GREAT AT ANY AGE

Ear Surgery in Nashville, TN

Many people are bothered by prominent, poorly shaped, or over-projecting ears. People who are unhappy with poorly shaped or over-projecting ears may be good candidates for ear reshaping surgery (otoplasty). Ear reshaping can be an excellent option for young children (as early as six or seven years of age), older children, teenagers, and adults. Dr. Griffin will gladly meet with you to discuss whether you or your child is a good candidate for ear reshaping surgery.

There are two main types of deformities that cause the ears to stick out too far from the head. In one type, the ear can be missing the outer cartilage fold called the antihelix, creating an ear with no curvature to the outer edge. In the other type, the cartilage of the bowl of the ear sticks out too far from the skull. One or both of these conditions can be present in either one or both ears. There are other less common deformities of the ear that can also be corrected with otoplasty.

In an otoplasty procedure, the outer cartilage fold is recreated with sutures and the prominent bowl cartilage is trimmed or set back to pull the ear closer to the head. The incision is located behind the ear and is barely visible once the ear is set back and the incision heals.
