The mommy makeover is popular at our Nashville, Tennessee, practice and it’s easy to see why. As a husband and father of 3, and a physician with lots of “mommies” on his staff, Dr. Griffin has a deep understanding of the aesthetic needs of mothers. Mommy makeover is a transformative surgery that combines several procedures—customized according to your own specific needs—to treat multiple areas of the body at once.
How Can Mommy Makeover Help?
The mommy makeover is a customizable, combination surgery that includes whichever procedures you and Dr. Griffin decide will help you look and feel more like your pre-baby self. Although each procedure has the potential to be unique, many mommy makeovers include at least 2 of the following:
- Breast augmentation to replace volume in the breasts lost after breastfeeding
- Breast lift to reduce sagging and reshape the breasts for youthful perkiness
- Tummy tuck to remove loose skin and create a firmer, slimmer abdominal contour
- Liposuction to selectively remove deposits of unwanted fat
Some patients also choose labiaplasty or laser vaginal rejuvenation to repair these delicate tissues, improving their enjoyment of sex and potentially reducing incidences of incontinence.

Your Mommy Makeover Options
It’s no secret that the breasts and abdomen are affected more by pregnancy than any other areas of the body. Therefore, many mommy makeovers focus on these areas. But pregnancy is a unique experience, and other areas of the body can be affected as well. Many women find that pregnancy has added volume to their bodies that they’d like to reduce, including stubborn fat pockets on the hips, legs, and upper back. Childbirth and the later stages of pregnancy can also cause changes to the labia and vaginal canal, resulting in discomfort, laxity, and reduced sensation.
The breasts can change in dynamic and unpredictable ways as the result of pregnancy. Different women may find that their breasts are smaller, larger, or even different sizes after pregnancy and nursing. Very often, they’re simply not as perky as they used to be. While breast augmentation is a popular addition to a mommy makeover, breast lift, breast reduction, or even a combined approach can be performed in order to create the best result possible.
To treat the abdomen, a mommy makeover may include a tummy tuck to remove excess, sagging skin and tighten abdominal muscles that might have been stretched or damaged during pregnancy. Additionally, liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat in the midsection as well as on the thighs, hips, back, or other areas
Vulva & Vagina
Changes in this area can often be attributed to hormonal fluctuations and the physical trauma of vaginal childbirth. If you’d like to treat this area, we offer DiVa, a nonsurgical option for addressing enlarged or stretched labia minora and majora as well as vaginal laxity and incontinence.

What to Expect
Typically, the procedures included in mommy makeover are performed in a single surgery that can require several hours. Mommy makeover is performed while you are under general anesthesia. Once the surgery is complete and you’ve returned home, you’ll need extra help from a trusted loved one for several days and up to 2 weeks. Your specific aftercare instructions depend on which procedures you underwent. However, all patients will need to abstain from vigorous activity, especially that which stresses incision sites, for several weeks. Most patients find that they can comfortably return to a sedentary work environment after 3 weeks.
Should I do all the procedures at once, or stage them?
That decision is an entirely personal one and will depend upon several factors, including the amount of time your schedule will realistically allow for recovery and your budget or timeframe. The advantage of doing everything at once is consolidating surgery and recovery time. After your singular recuperation period, it will be over and done with at once and you can move forward in enjoying your new look. While there may be some cost savings in combining procedures, this should not be your main concern. The most important consideration has to be how much time you can realistically allow yourself for a complete recovery. If you can’t take a few extra days to recover from your mommy makeover, then it may be best for you to stagger procedures.
How soon will I be able to resume normal activities?
Generally, your life should be getting back to normal after around 3 to 4 weeks, depending on how much work was done. This does not mean you cannot resume activities sooner, it just means you may not be back to your full pre-surgery level of activity until you’ve given your body ample time to heal.
What will my scars look like?
It depends on which procedures you undergo. For example, tummy tuck typically requires a long, low incision placed just above the pubic area. Breast procedures may use incisions in the breast fold, around the areola, or both. In any case, Dr. Griffin makes every effort to ensure your scars are as discreet as possible. However, whenever an incision is made, scarring is an inevitability. By following your aftercare instructions and avoiding exposing your incisions to the sun, you can do your part to ensure your scars are inconspicuous.
